Jon Thompson, Principal

Jon Thompson brings over a decade of experience in education and a passion for supporting students in achieving success both academically and personally. A former student-athlete, Jon played football and ran track at the University of Richmond before transferring to Walsh University, where he also played basketball and graduated in 2013.

Early in his career, Jon worked as a Physical Education and Social Studies teacher, and later transitioned into leadership roles, including serving as a Dean of Students in Cleveland, Nashville, and Tampa at both the K-8 and high school levels. He also served as a Dean of Social Emotional Learning, further deepening his commitment to supporting students’ holistic development.

Throughout his career, Jon has coached football, basketball, and track, which has fueled a strong belief in the power of athletics as a vehicle for life lessons and personal growth. In addition to coaching students, Jon has also coached teachers, managed teams, and created systems that have led to positive, successful outcomes for students and staff alike. He firmly believes in the importance of collaboration and teamwork to achieve excellence.

Jon’s educational philosophy is rooted in his “4 E’s to Academic Success”: Education, Economics, Environment, and Exposure. By focusing on these critical elements, he aims to create opportunities for students that empower them to succeed in school and in life.

Currently residing in Akron with his 7-year-old daughter, Laila, Jon is excited to be joining the Akron Preparatory School community. He is dedicated to building strong relationships with students, staff, and families to continue fostering an environment where every student can thrive.
